Abisko is located about 150 miles (250 Kilometers) north of the Arctic circle on Torne träsk which is one of Sweden's largest lakes, and very close to the Norwegian border.
Abisko is known for its unique Nordic flora and fauna, the midnight sun, and the Northern Lights weaving across the sky in the wintertime. Abisko is considered one of the best places in the world to observe the northern lights! From end of May through mid-July the sun never sets and from late December through early January Abisko barely has twilight for 2-3 hours a day. The sun tends to smile on Abisko and the area holds the record for lowest precipitation in the whole of Sweden.
Nestled high in the mountains Abisko is on the edge of the Abisko National Park, and at the start of the 275 miles (440 kilometers) long Kungsleden (King's Trail), which follows the Scandinavian Mountain Range and is Sweden's best known skiing and hiking route.
The area is renown for its geological, topographical and climate diversity which is why such a large variety of flora and fauna can be found here. This makes it an important place for scientific research, particularly of alpine and subalpine ecosystems.
The renowned Abisko Scientific Research Station (link to goahti page), is the starting point of GoNorth! Fennoscandia 2008 adventure learning expedition.
